Joy, an Austrian Eurodance and pop band, was formed in 1984 in Bad Aussee by high school friends Andreas (Andy) Schweitzer (born February 26, 1960), Alfred (Freddy) Jaklitsch (born January 22, 1960), and Manfred Temmel (February 25, 1959 – June 8, 2019). Initially pursuing separate careers—Schweitzer as a policeman, Jaklitsch as a teacher, and Temmel as a DJ—they reunited to focus on music, signing with OK Musica. Producer Michael Scheickl, a 1982 Eurovision contestant, guided their early work. Their debut single, “Lost in Hong Kong” (1985), flopped, but “Touch by Touch” became a European chart-topper, hitting number one in Austria for five weeks and earning gold status in Portugal and Spain.

Their first album, Hello (1986), charted across Europe, with “Valerie” becoming a hit in Eastern Europe, notably reaching number three in the USSR. The 1986 album Joy and Tears featured “Japanese Girls,” which reached number 14 in Austria and gained massive popularity in Asia, leading to a 1987 tour in Bangkok, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, and Seoul, where they performed for over 60,000 fans. Joy’s non-political lyrics allowed performances behind the Iron Curtain, including on East German TV’s Ein Kessel Buntes.

In the early 1990s, Jaklitsch and Temmel, without Schweitzer, signed with BMG Ariola, releasing “Hello, Mrs. Johnson” (1994). Joined by Johannes Groebl in 1995, they recorded Full of Joy, but BMG shelved it, prompting a hiatus. In 1996, Jaklitsch and Temmel formed the successful Austrian band Seer. Joy performed at nostalgia events like Russia’s “Diskoteka 80-x” festival in 2002.

Reuniting in 2010 for their 25th anniversary, Joy released Enjoy (2011), peaking at number 21 in Austria, with new tracks and remakes of “Touch by Touch” and “Valerie.” They performed at Estonia’s Viljandi Retrofest and Moscow’s Olympic Stadium. After Jaklitsch left in 2012 to focus on Seer, Scheickl became a permanent member. As of 2025, Joy, now Schweitzer, Temmel (until his death), and Scheickl, continues with occasional performances and a 2016 single, “Lunapark,” maintaining their 1980s Eurodance legacy.
